The Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Dreamset at the ALL IN Festival Sunday was a star-studded show. Alt/indie/folk band Dawes was at the heart of the lineup. Popping in to join the party were John Oates, vocalist Nicki Bluhm, Goose guitarist Rick Mitarotonda, vocalist Jenny Lewis, guitarist Duane Betts, and Cage the Elephant’s frontman Matt Shultz and bassist Daniel Tichenor.
The nine-song set started with “The Waiting” and included all the Petty mega hits, concluding with “Free Fallin.’” It was fun watching the band jam together; there were lots of smiles and nods between the massively talented musicians. The audience was having fun, too, especially as Shultz egged them on to sing at the tops of their longs for “Breakdown.” It was a fitting tribute for an artist who left us way too soon.
