INDIANAPOLIS

The Flaming Lips performance at Everwise Amphitheater in Indianapolis on June 26 was nothing short of impeccable. The psychedelic rock sound, paired with the immersive visuals, made for a night nobody would forget.
From the very beginning, as Wayne Coyne took the stage in suit and tie and the robotic sounds of “Fight Test” hit, the crowd was screaming at the tops of their lungs. During this song the 4 pink robots as seen on the cover of their 2002 album “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots” began to inflate and cover the stage with their massive size. Wayne was standing in between the two in the middle karate chopping and pulling on them.
After the opening song Wayne interacted with the crowds telling them to scream as loud as they could. The band sounded perfectly in sync and their chords, and drum beats matched with the visuals on screen behind them.
As the opening songs completed and the inflatable robots went down Wayne stated they would be playing their 2002 album in its entirety which was matched with a huge applause. The show went on with numbers such as “Do You Realize??” which sported a giant inflatable rainbow, and “The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song” sporting giant inflatable lips and eyes truly showing the bands diversity in song writing. From heartfelt mellow songs to upbeat and happy songs.
Wayne expressed his love for the crowd many times throughout, responding to people screaming “I Love You!” from the crowd. He would shout back every time with an “I Love You Too,” saying he would be gladly interrupted by the love from his fans. He also stated that The Flaming Lips have the best audience in all of music.
For me, the most distinctive feature of this Flaming Lips show was the outstanding visual presence of their many props and visual light shows. Wayne always had something ready for the next song and every outfit change and prop was met with huge applause and matched the feeling of the songs perfectly. From throwing huge balloons into the crowd to be passed between the fans, to performing in a bubble, the theatrics were a spectacle.
At the end of their set the band performed “Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung,” which felt like a lovely sound to end the show. As the band walked off stage the screaming began; fans were not ready for the show to end. Fans screamed at the top of their lungs for an encore.
Wayne returned to stage and entered the iconic bubble to perform “My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion” and “A Spoonful Weighs a Ton.” After these two songs wayne walked off stage and returned with giant balloons spelling out “Fuck Yeah Indianapolis” and held it up high for everyone to see before throwing it into the crowd.
