    Judah and the Lion Indianapolis

This was my 2nd time to see Judah and the Lion. I first saw them a few years ago when they opened up for Twenty One Pilots. The energy brought to the stage back then made me an instant fan. I had heard their song Suit and Jacket on Alt Nation but had no idea what to expect with a live show. Just as before they did not fail to put on an amazing show Friday night at Farm Bureau Lawn. You cannot help but jump around as they sing. They sang Say it Ain’t so by Blink 182 and had th

Justin Stone - The Egyptian Room at Old National Centre 08 08 19

Spotify sensation Justin Stone showed no weakness – or fear – when he opened for I Prevail at the packed Egyptian Room at Old National Centre Thursday night. The Columbus, Ohio, native performed an intense, gritty, and slightly sinister set of rap/rock songs with a blue-collar vibe the crowd could relate to. He made a point of talking directly to the audience between every song, commanding their attention and getting them pumped up for the rest of the show. He ended his set b

Hooked On Moe. Blues Traveler. G. Love All Roads Runaround Tour

Back in the mid 90's I was traveling at break neck speed to make it to a local amphitheater to see Blues Traveler. My whole life, as it seemed, hinged on making it to Deer Creek Music Theatre to see The Black Crowes and Blues Traveler. There was a terrible thunderstorm that night but it would not deter me from this show. At the time I was blown away by this bill of two herculean acts. These bands were in their prime and playing seemingly endless hits that night. My recollect

    Sam Law Band Shines

The first time I saw Sam Law Band perform they were an opening act for the great Lou Gramm of Foreigner fame. It was an early set and there was an impending storm on the horizon. I was impressed. This band had a unique sound and very nice stage presence. After the show they were at their merchandise tent and surprised that I asked for their autograph. I love talented bands and for me I don't discriminate on whether a band is known worldwide or a local talent. Fast forward a f

    Hippocampus Old National Centre

When I think of high-energy bands, Hippo Campus isn’t exactly the first one that pops into my head. I consider their dreamy, synth-y sound to be pretty chill, so I didn’t expect a lot of on-stage antics when they performed at the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre. Imagine my surprise when when they bounced onto the stage amid dramatic lighting and struck the first notes of the title cut from their new album, “Bambi.” Although the song itself isn’t a real banger, lead vocal

Steel Panther Rocking With The Fat Girls

Certain people just have a way of making political correctness meaningless. These few charmed individuals such as shock jock Howard Stern, late night comedians, even a few notable politicians can escape the backlash from a few misplaced words or phrases. Well Steel Panther is another addition to this enviable list. They take glam metal to a whole new level of fun and comedy. Mixing 80's metal with outrageous lyrics, Steel Panther takes their listener back to their teenage yea

    Point Of Know Return

Kansas “Point of Know Return” 40th Anniversary Tour at Old National Centre 11/11/18 After 40 years and over 6 million copies, Kansas’ “Point of Know Return” album remains an icon of progressive rock. To see and hear it performed live, in its entirety, is an amazing experience, and one which I wholeheartedly recommend! I was privileged to be part of the sold-out crowd when Kansas came to the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre in Indianapolis November 11. I wondered if I’d r

Mesmerizing Ghost Ritual at Old National Centre 10/30/18

I love Halloween, but I had a hard time getting into the spirit this year. That is, until I went to the Swedish cult-metal band Ghost’s concert at the Murat Theatre in Old National Centre. Although the sold-out show wasn’t Halloween-themed, there was definitely an occult-like vibe going vis-à-vis the concertgoers in goth costumes, the IV bags filled with a blood-red adult beverage, the misty, cathedral-themed stage setup, the masked and costumed band members, and the incredi

Young The Giant Sets The Tone With New Contemplative Album

YTG's most recent release Mirror Master sets the path for an energetic and thoughtful tour. Their highly anticipated return will see the band venturing through Indianapolis on October 26th performing in the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre. Surely they will be playing their classics "Cough Syrup" and "Apartment" (one of my personal favorites). But new and old fans alike will be thrilled with selections such as "Simplify". I can attest to the bands love of stage. They pres

    Shiny Penny

Well I must say I really didn't know Shiny Penny until Laura turned me on to them. I'm absolutely loving their EP Wait, Don't Hold. Wonderful tunes that remind me a bit of Maroon 5 mixed with Jamiroquai. Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors

Lynyrd Skynyrd Street Survivors Farewell Tour 8/4/18 Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center Noblesville, Indiana When I think of Southern Rock, one band immediately pops into mind: Lynyrd Skynyrd. I hate to use the word legendary too much, but this is one band that truly fits that description. Their pioneering style and relevant lyrics transcend genres and demographics, making them an integral thread in the fabric of American music. It goes without saying I was really excited to se

    Jamey Johnson Country Outlaw

Jamey Johnson Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center 08 04 18 If you’re like me, you didn’t know who Jamey Johnson was before he opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center, but you sure as hell did afterward. This burly, bearded man who looked like he’d be right at home running moonshine blew me away as he finessed his prized, autographed guitar and poured his soul into the microphone. Johnson kicked off the set with “High Cost of Living” and was joined on the st

Cellogram at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center

I think it’s pretty safe to assume that many of the concert-goers in attendance at the Lindsey Sterling/Evanescence concert at Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center had never heard of Cellogram before that night. And it’s also pretty safe to assume they won’t forget them, either. The unusual, two-person act was fascinating to watch and delightful to listen to. Consisting of cellist Dave Eggar and percussionist Chuck Palmer, the duo engaged the audience with their enthusiasm and an

Sponge and Origins of Alternative Rock

The year was 1995. I was just out of college and looking to have fun with a few friends at X-Fest. The line-up included Bush, Weezer, Ned’s Atomic Dustbin and Sponge. As a group we decided to jump over the rails of the lower level. In those days venues didn't heavily guard the pavilion like today. Upon arrival to the lower level we jubilantly jumped and thrashed in a glorious mosh pit. Just in time for Sponge as “Plowed” blasted from the speakers. I vividly remember looking b

Rock and Photography with Marian Hill

Music festivals can be filled with many unexpected surprises. One of those surprises, if you will, was watching and shooting Marian Hill. Of the hundreds of artists I get to photograph every year it is near impossible to be completely up to date on every artist. Also there are those difficult scenarios where scheduling makes it hard to traverse from one side of a festival to another. Hence you view the artist at the next closest stage. Therefore imagine how incredible it was
